The Differences between LED Outdoor Signs and Indoor Signs
There is a vast array of different designs and options available for those who wish to purchase LED signage. However for the purposes of this article it is convenient to make a single broad distinction between the various types of LED displays, and class them as being designed for either indoor or out door use. Many of the same technological and design principles apply to both of these types of LED signs, but there are of course some important differences.
Firstly one of the major differences between indoor and outdoor signage relates to size. While indoor LED displays tend to be relatively small, outdoor signs are essentially unlimited in terms of size. This works both ways in fact, as many LED outdoor signscan be no bigger than ticker boards, while others can take up the sides of entire buildings.
This is of course one of the great advantages of LED signage, as the technology can easily be adapted to signs of any scale. The LEDs themselves come in a range of sizes, which is of course essential for sharp and distinct images. The sizes of the LEDs that will be used in any LED display signage are of course determined by the size of the display itself. Small displays will require smaller LEDs, to allow for symbols and images to be clearly constructed. Of course it would also be possible to create a large outdoor LED billboard using only very small LEDs, but this would be both impractical and unnecessary.
The majority of LED display billboards and large outdoor LED signs are made from a number of LED display panels assembled to form a larger panel. This makes customization relatively straightforward, and allows for very large outdoor LED billboards to be built.
Of course any signage that is designed to be installed outdoors must be weatherproof and storm resistant. This is especially true for illuminated signage, which generally depends on electricity to function. LED outdoor signs should therefore be tested extensively before being distributed to consumers. For example they should be subjected to widely varying temperatures, to ensure that they will function correctly at both extremes of the temperature scale. They should also be subjected to shock tests, to ensure that they will not be damaged by winds and other environmental factors. While indoor signage must also be tested carefully, generally it will not be necessary to test products to such extremes.

So then, aggressive solvent inks tend to be more effective in terms of resisting the outside elements and will work on a wider range of materials. The resins that are used with aggressive solvent ink also make it a lot easier to produce an ink which a glossy appearance when dry, giving the colours in the media more impact and grab – which is great for advertising signs and banners.

Hi. We’re looking for an LED sign to go outdoors. It would preferably be full colour and programmable so we can change the messages each day or week. I’ve found a few sites that offer them in the US but not in the UK. Does anyone know of any and have a rough idea of what they might cost? It would be ok if it’s just one colour but ideally it needs to be able to show images and not just lines of text?
